Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside
Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried
(I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)
This illustration is a humble tribute to David Bowie, cosmic genius, singer, musician, visionary, inspiring character. I’m sad to see him go so early but I’m grateful for the music, videos and music he created and shared throughout his life. His latest album was especially inspiring to me, as was his appearance in the 80s cult-classic Labyrinth. Rest in peace, Mr Bowie!
In March I was contacted by Zyed, a DJ who will soon be releasing a mixtape. He desired an illustrated album cover for his mixtape and he had a very precise idea of what he was looking for; a portrait of himself producing graffiti on a concrete wall. He sent me a visual of what wanted and we went from there.
Because his portrait had to be realistic, we began by taking a photo of him holding an imaginary spray can, a reference I would then use to illustrate him.
The project went smoothly. What you’ll find below are the several steps of the process, from the original sketch to the final creation. A few revisions to the title of the album, the choice of typography and the beard of the client were made along the way.
